Your evening wedding invitations are more than just a practical detail, they are a continuation of your day, setting the tone for the celebration to come. Thoughtfully chosen wording, paired with beautiful design, ensures your guests feel warmly invited and excited for what’s ahead. Using tried-and-tested wording styles, here’s how to create an evening invitation that feels both clear, considered and personal.
Formal vs Informal Wording
The tone of your invitation should reflect the overall feel of your wedding. For a wedding day which is more traditional, a more formal wording approach works beautifully, such as“Amelia & James request the pleasure of your company at an evening reception to celebrate their wedding…”
Whereas a relaxed, modern celebration might lean towards something softer and more personal, “Amelia & James are delighted to invite you to celebrate their marriage at an evening reception…”
Both styles are equally appropriate, it simply depends on whether your day leans towards more classic or contemporary. In my experience, many couples opt for a balance of the two, keeping the structure traditional while softening the invitation language.

Day Guests vs Evening Only Invitations
My biggest tip is clarity is key! Your wedding invitation should focus purely on the evening celebration such as "an evening reception" or "for drinks and dancing". Simply avoid referencing the ceremony or earlier parts of the wedding day. The focus is the evening celebration, the atmosphere and the chance to celebrate with you.

Timing and RSVP Details
Evening invitations are more concise without all the wedding ceremony information, but guests still need the essential details including the time to arrive, the venue and location and RSVP instructions. Creating a clear RSVP card helps you manage your guest list and means guests will be faster to respond because it's easy!

Cultural Considerations
Be mindful of different cultural backgrounds when considering your invites. In the UK, separate day and evening guest lists are very common. However, for other cultures, it's different. Clear, thoughtful wording helps avoid any confusion, ensuring guests they are warmly invited to join your evening celebration.
